Chattanooga is the river town that reinvented itself as an outdoor city and pulled it off. The Tennessee River bends through downtown under the Walnut Street Bridge, a half-mile of blue steel that has carried only feet and bike tires since the nineties, and on the far bank Coolidge Park spreads out below the Northshore cafes. Lookout Mountain rises straight behind the city, with Sunset Rock as the evening ritual and world-class sandstone climbing a few minutes past it. Locals shorten it all to Nooga and spend their weekends on the Riverwalk, Stringer's Ridge or Signal Mountain.
