Asheville sits in a bowl of the Blue Ridge at 2,134 feet, which is why the old brochures called it the Land of the Sky and why every road out of town climbs. The Blue Ridge Parkway curls past the city on its way to Mount Pisgah and Craggy Gardens, where the rhododendron goes off in June and the ridges go copper in October. Down in the valley the French Broad River, one of the oldest rivers on earth, slides past the River Arts District, where studios have been rebuilding since the 2024 flood and painters still work with the garage doors open. Downtown is art deco and Pack Square and the Grove Arcade, with more breweries per block than seems reasonable and an old bus turned into a taco stand.
