Hilton Head Island hides its buildings behind live oaks and keeps its signs low and wooden, which is why twelve miles of beach can feel this calm in July. Mornings start on a bike: more than sixty miles of paved path run under the oaks from Coligny Beach to Fish Haul and out through the marsh. Dolphins work Calibogue Sound at sunset, loggerhead turtles nest on the beach from May to October and the island goes lights-out for them, and the trails on Pinckney Island fill with egrets and alligators that pay no attention to you. Mitchelville, on the north end, was the first self-governed town of freed people in the country. Locals just call it the Island, and everything else is off-island.
