Yellowstone was the world's first national park, set aside in 1872 before Wyoming was even a state. It sits on a volcanic caldera the size of Rhode Island, which is why half of the planet's geysers are here: Old Faithful going off every ninety minutes or so, Grand Prismatic glowing orange and blue from the boardwalk, Mammoth's travertine terraces steaming in the cold. Then there is the wildlife. Bison hold up traffic on the Grand Loop, elk bugle through Mammoth in the fall, grizzlies turn over logs in Hayden Valley, and the wolves reintroduced in 1995 still hunt the Lamar Valley at dawn while people line the pullouts with spotting scopes.
