Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor is the town on Mount Desert Island where people get up at 4 a.m. on purpose. Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park catches the first sunrise in the United States for a good part of the year, and the summit lot fills with sleepy pilgrims in sweatshirts to watch it. The rest of the day belongs to the Park Loop Road, Thunder Hole throwing spray at high tide, popovers on the lawn at Jordan Pond, and the carriage roads that John D. Rockefeller Jr. built for horses and that bikes now own. At low tide you can walk the gravel bar out to Bar Island, which is where the town got its name.
