Flagstaff is the Arizona nobody expects: 7,000 feet up, inside the largest ponderosa pine forest on the continent, with the San Francisco Peaks rising to 12,633 feet behind downtown and snow on the ground for a good part of the winter. The name comes from a pine stripped and raised as a flagpole on July 4, 1876. Route 66 still runs through the middle of town past the brick railroad hotels, freight trains roll by all day, and at night the sky goes so dark that Flagstaff became the first International Dark Sky City in the world. Pluto was found here, from a telescope on a hill above downtown.

Our Flagstaff collection is drawn from a cold October night under the pines. The crewneck carries a single ponderosa against a field of stars with the Peaks on the horizon, printed in midnight blue, cream and bark orange, the town name set below in a railroad-era slab. The tee is lighter, Flagstaff over the 1876 line with a small pine, built for Buffalo Park at sunrise and the walk down Route 66 for a late dinner. The mug and sticker share the pine-and-stars artwork.

Everything is original artwork, printed to order in the USA and shipped with tracking. We make it for the people who stayed after school, the Phoenix families who drive up every summer weekend to breathe, and anyone who has stepped out of a car here at night and looked up for a long time.

Why we love Flagstaff

  • ✦The world's first International Dark Sky City, and it shows every clear night
  • ✦The San Francisco Peaks top out at 12,633 feet behind downtown
  • ✦Route 66 and the railroad still run straight through the middle of town
  • ✦Pluto was discovered from a telescope on a hill above Main Street
  • ✦Ponderosa bark smells like vanilla when the sun hits it

Best time to go: October for gold aspens on the Peaks and cold, clear nights; late June for 75-degree days when Phoenix is 110 and the pines smell like vanilla.

Flagstaff apparel FAQ

Is this Northern Arizona University or city merchandise?+

No. Every design is original artwork from independent designers and contains no university or city marks. We are not affiliated with Northern Arizona University or the City of Flagstaff.

Is the Flagstaff hoodie warm enough for a mountain winter?+

It is a midweight 50/50 cotton-poly fleece with a lined hood. Flagstaff winter nights drop well below freezing, so layer it under a jacket for a night at the observatory; on a June evening it is enough on its own.

How long until a Flagstaff order arrives?+

Orders print in 2 to 5 business days and ship with tracking. Delivery to northern Arizona usually takes 3 to 6 business days after dispatch, so plan on about two weeks total.
