Montauk, New York

Montauk is where New York finally runs out of road. Route 27 ends at the Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned under George Washington and lit since 1796, and past that there is nothing but Atlantic until Portugal. Locals call it The End and mean it with pride. The hamlet is a fishing town first, with charter boats lined up in Lake Montauk harbor and surfcasters working the rocks under the light, and a surf town second, with the lineup at Ditch Plains filling before sunrise from May through October.
