Saratoga Springs runs on three things: the mineral springs that gave the town its name, the oldest thoroughbred track in America, and a Broadway that has never needed a chain store to stay full. The Saratoga Race Course has been running since 1863, and for six weeks every summer the Spa City wakes up at dawn for morning workouts, eats breakfast at the rail, and dresses up for the afternoon card. The rest of the year belongs to Congress Park, the Victorian porches on Union Avenue, the geyser at Saratoga Spa State Park and the bath houses that drew people here in the first place.
