Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is a Vermont village with a white church steeple, a covered bridge and the tallest mountain in the state standing right behind it. Mount Mansfield tops out at 4,393 feet, and its summit ridge, which locals read as a face with a Forehead, a Nose and a Chin, is where the East's ski history started in the 1930s. Route 108 climbs through Smugglers' Notch between house-sized boulders and closes every winter when the snow wins. Down in the village, the Stowe Recreation Path follows the West Branch for five miles, Main Street holds the general stores and cider shops, and Bingham Falls and Moss Glen Falls are a short hike from the road.
