Tampa is a port town that rolled cigars for a century and never lost the taste for a long lunch. Ybor City still has brick streets, wrought-iron balconies and free-range chickens from the days when its factories employed thousands of Cuban, Spanish and Italian rollers, and the Cuban sandwich here comes with salami, a point locals will defend to the end. Bayshore Boulevard runs a continuous sidewalk for four and a half miles along the water, the Riverwalk links Curtis Hixon Park to the minarets of Plant Hall, and Davis Islands sits in the bay like a neighborhood on a boat. Every January the city lets a pirate ship invade and calls it tradition.
