Naples, Florida

Naples was named in 1886 by a founder who claimed its bay beat the one in Italy, and the sunsets have been making his case ever since. The whole town walks out to the Naples Pier at dusk, a wooden pier that storms have knocked down and locals have rebuilt more than once since 1888, to watch the sun drop into the Gulf while pelicans work the pilings. Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South do the dinner-and-gelato part, Lowdermilk Park does the family beach part, and the mangrove boardwalk at Clam Pass and the shell-strewn sand at Delnor-Wiggins do the wild part. Keewaydin Island is boat-access only, and the Everglades start twenty minutes east. From January to April the town triples in size, and everyone just calls it season.
