Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis is a colonial capital that never stopped being a sailing town. The Maryland State House, finished in 1779, is the oldest state capitol still in legislative use and the only one that served as the national capitol, back in 1783. Down the hill, Main Street runs straight into City Dock, where the inlet everyone calls Ego Alley fills with boats doing slow laps so the crowd can look. Across Spa Creek is Eastport, the neighborhood that declares independence from the rest of town every year as a joke that is only half a joke. Out past the Severn River, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge arcs four miles across to the Eastern Shore, and Thomas Point Shoal Light sits in the bay like a cottage on stilts.
