Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is the town at the very bottom of New Jersey, Exit 0 on the Parkway, and it has been taking summer guests since before the Revolution. The whole place is a National Historic Landmark district of gingerbread Victorians painted in colors that should not work and do. The Promenade runs along Beach Avenue, Washington Street Mall holds the fudge and the saltwater taffy, and the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse at Cape May Point State Park gives you 199 steps and a view to Delaware. At Sunset Beach you dig for Cape May diamonds, the clear quartz pebbles that wash up by the concrete ship, and you stay for the flag-lowering at dusk.
