Door County, Wisconsin

Door County is the seventy-mile thumb of Wisconsin that pokes up between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, and for most of the Midwest it is simply the Door. The bay side has Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay strung along Highway 42 with their white steeples and supper clubs; the quiet side has Cave Point, where the lake carves limestone into caves you can hear from the trail, and Cana Island, where the lighthouse keeps watch at the end of a stone causeway. In July the orchards hand out buckets for tart cherry picking, and every evening somewhere on the peninsula a fish boil hits its boil-over with a whoosh of flame.
