Madison sits on a strip of land barely a mile wide, with Lake Mendota on one side and Lake Monona on the other, and the whole city is organized around that fact. State Street runs from the Capitol dome to the campus, the Saturday farmers' market wraps all the way around Capitol Square from spring until the first hard frost, and every warm evening ends with people drifting toward the water to watch the sun drop behind Picnic Point. It is a college town and a state capital at the same time, which means there is always a lecture, a protest, a brat fry or a sailboat race going on somewhere.
