San Francisco is seven miles by seven miles, forty-some hills and a fog with its own fan club. The Golden Gate disappears into it most summer mornings, then reappears orange by noon over the Presidio and Baker Beach. Dolores Park fills with blankets the minute the sun shows, Lands End keeps its cypress trail and the ruins of Sutro Baths at the edge of the continent, and Twin Peaks gives you the whole grid at once. The cable cars still climb Hyde Street, the Ferry Building still smells like sourdough and coffee, and real summer arrives in September, after the tourists have gone home in their new fleece jackets.
